You be the Judge
In courts across Lancashire, the public have been deciding the fate of convicted criminals. The exercise is part of the Board’s You be the Judge Roadshow, where the public come along to court to hear real, recent, anonymous court cases and vote on the appropriate sentence using Who wants to be a millionaire? style voting consoles.
The audience hear from a defence lawyer and CPS prosecutor before deciding on a sentence, and then find out the actual sentence passed in that case.
The evening is hosted by a local Judge or Magistrate, giving the audience the opportunity to ask questions about the case as well as broader court matters. The evenings are well attended and educational, with a very lively atmosphere!

Local Crime and Community Sentencing - LCCS
Local community groups have also been getting involved as they follow a fictitious case through the Magistrates' Court to sentencing. A local Magistrate and member of the Probation Service are on hand to guide group members as they take on roles from offender to prosecutor and find out about the challenges of community orders.
